Reflections

How did you contribute?
Ok, well.
I was not in any group.
I just helped out, but i did go to give out flyers to raise money.
Also, I sold the postcards at Wesley Methodist Church.
:D

How did it make you feel?

How did it make me feel? Hmmm.
It was kind of meaningful?
Since I also had nothing to during the December holidays,
I thought I would just help out.
It was interesting.
I did go to a family's home with Wilson's group.
I somehow feel lucky?
That my family is VERY stable compared to that particular family.

What left the deepest impression on you during the project?

Deepest impression...
I will say the same thing,
cos I only went once.
I always see volunteers helping needy families on TV.
And you will feel touched maybe, for a while, and the next moment,
you forget everything.
But to me, that one experience was really meaningful.
Maybe I will not forget it for my entire life?

What touched you most?
It was the spirit that the family had.
They had a son which is disabled.
I don't know how to describe his condition,
so let's just take it as 'disabled'.
Okay. If my wife gave birth to a son like him,
I really won't know what to do.
Well, maybe I will abandon him?
But the father and mother of that child never gave up.
They raised him up till he is so old.
And I strongly believe that was really really difficult to raise a kid like that.
I really admire that.
So well.
Some people are just fortunate like us.
And some are not.

Tham Guo Bin.

Reflection!

Heyy ,

WHAT DID I CONTRIBUTE ? HOW DO I FEEL ABOUT IT ?

Personally, this is a good experience for me. Before i start correct me if i have any spelling mistake or shortcut! ^^ I contributed nothing but ideas and strength which most of you had contributed. I feel that even if you contributed nothing, there is always next time. Sometimes while you were doing these services, you got no more physical and spiritual power and you will tend to stop doing it. Let me tell you this... GOD WILL GIVE YOU PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL STRENGTH.

Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God! Psalm 68:35

WHAT LEFT THE DEEPEST IMPRESSION FOR ME DURING THE PROJECT ?

I will never forget this. I strongly believe that Mr. Tay will also never forget this. Let me cut it short. ^^ I, Guo Bin, Shang Zheng and Mr. Tay went to this person's house. Their family is poor and nothing but poor. People like us who already get used to our way of life, our parents will help us to get everything done. Unlike our parents, their parents' IQ isn't that high. He also has a sister who doesn't live with them but will give them money to spend every month.
Their house is a 1-room HDB flat, for a family of three with 2 dogs. Imagine if you were the person. I know you guys would be thinking whether what i'm saying now is really from my heart. I would say now that ALL THESE WORDS COME FROM MY HEART. Some people might think that i am too naggy? The deepest impression is when his FATHER TIED UP HIM TO THE WALL. Imagine it again, CLOSE YOUR EYES NOW, YOUR MIND IS BLANK , YOU WERE TIED UP TO THE WALL FOR THE WHOLE DAY EVEN YEARS!
GOD MAKE THE RICH AND THE POOR.

As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God! Psalm 40:17

The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 1 Samuel 2:7 / Job 1:21

WHAT IS THE UNFORGETTABLE LESSON I HAVE LEARNT ?

I have learnt that if you are rich, then donate to the poor. If you are poor, then donate to the poorer. Let me tell you something that i learnt from last week's service: HONOR someone who DISHONORS you, and you will get a reward. HONOR someone who HONORS you, and you will get a reward too. But the main point isn't about rewards. You have to help people w/o expecting a reward, which basically means helping with your true heart. Dishonoring your parents is worse than adultery, stealing etc. I hope you guys will HONOR your parents from now onwards if you do not.Honestly, i am not in a good relationship with my parents but i'm beginning to HONOR them. What i mean by HONOR, is that we should not treat as common or ordinary person. You will also be rewarded for helping people. i just got some good news. I just got to know that i got extra CIP hours, which surprised me. I didn't expect to get a reward.

The LORD repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge! Ruth 2:12

"I have stirred him up in righteousness, and I will make all his ways level; he shall build my city and set my exiles free, not for price or reward," says the LORD of hosts.
Isaiah 45:13

Great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man, rewarding each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds. Jeremiah 32:19

WHAT TOUCHED ME THE MOST?

The smiles in the faces of the poor and needy touched me the most. When you help them and after that they say thank you and smile at you, you will feel like you have achieved something good. You will also eventually smile back. In fact, just the words, 'THANK YOU!' also touched me.

REFLECTIONS FROM SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECT

The Service-Learning project that we did over the December holidays was a great experience for me. I am SO proud of those of you who contributed your ideas, time, effort and money for this project! :) Here are some of the lessons that I learnt.

1. GOD WILL PROVIDE

When I got the 1000 postcards printed, I had doubts about whether we'd really be able to sell them all and raise the $1000 we needed. The first few days were quite disappointing, but to my surprise, the donations from WMC exceeded our target! I should have known God better than to have such little faith, and fail to trust Him to answer our prayers. Whenever we do anything for Him, He will always provide, and sometimes much more than we expect!

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him." (1 Corinthians 2:9)

"Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." (Ephesians 3:20 - 21)

2. THERE ARE SO MANY NEEDS EVERYWHERE!

Most of us live relatively comfortable lifestyles, and do not need to worry that much about money. If we do not keep our eyes wide open, and have hearts of compassion, we may never notice the needs of others in our community. I'm sure the visit to one of the benficiaries' homes to deliver the washing machine was an eye-opener to those of us who went.

3. GOD WORKS THROUGH US

I am so thankful that God blessed so many people through us. We were not only able to fulfill 4 beneficiaries' Christmas wishes - we also fulfilled several wishes of the MINDS Clementi Training and Development Centre (including adult diapers and CD players), and were able to pay for renting a lorry for a day to transport SGB gifts. (And this is not a complete list!)

When we delivered the washing machine and were trying to set it up, we bumped into a kind plumber who provided his services for free. I believe that God worked through him too - thank you Uncle! He definitely also works through the many, many social workers in Singapore who work with the disabled and the less fortunate almost everyday. There really are Good Samaritans around!

There are so many good and wonderful things that we can do - in our families, in school, in BB, in our groups of friends, in our community... Are we willing to be a blessing to others?

"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10)

"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7)

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!
Reply to this post and write your reflections
(as long / short as you like).

You may want to use these questions to guide you:
- How did you contribute? How did it make you feel?
- What left the deepest impression on you during the project?
- What is the most unforgettable lesson you have learnt?
- What touched you most?
